M1 Peer Pleasure Youth Theatre Festival 2017
Presented by ArtsWok Collaborative
In Collaboration with Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay
Triple Bill

Advisory (Some Mature Content)

Devised & Performed by Down Syndrome Association (Singapore)
Conceptualised, Written & Directed by Jean Ng
Assistant Director, Julius Foo

Nonsense is a story about refugees.

It is also a story about us.

War is nonsense.

Millions losing their families and homes is nonsense.

And then,

What we take as sense may sometimes be nonsense.

What we take as nonsense may sometimes be beauty and hope.

Nonsense is an original play devised and performed by young people with Down syndrome and other intellectual differences.

The Box

Devised & Performed by St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School
Written & Directed by Dwayne Lau

In a world saturated by social media and its influences on lifestyles, latest trends and body image, the temptation is to curate a pseudo perfect way of life. The Box explores the struggles that teenagers face negotiating this superficial world, filtering away flaws and blemishes so that all that remains is a hazy tint of reality.

The Untitled Play (working title)

Staged by UNSAID
Directed by Serena Ho

A new play that will draw from crowd-sourced stories on mental illness and our attitudes towards this in contemporary society. Can we make space for multiple realities? This work is staged by a collective of young doers committed to transforming the untold narratives of Singapore into meaningful and engaging works of art.

M1 Peer Pleasure Youth Theatre Festival is a unique platform that mentors youths in the craft of theatre-making, providing opportunities for them to collaborate with their peers to stage productions with important social themes.

Leonard Bernstein's Mass Performed by Orchestra of the Music Makers (Singapore)
What is the role of faith in times of social and political disillusionment? When Jacqueline Kennedy approached composer Leonard Bernstein to compose a piece for the 1971 inauguration of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the composer had a surprising inspiration amidst the political and social turmoil of the 1960s—the Roman Catholic Mass. At the heart of Mass: A Theatre Piece is the Celebrant, who, disillusioned by the doubts of his community, goes through a crisis of faith.Arguably Bernstein’s most ambitious work, Mass receives its long overdue Singapore premiere in the composer’s birth centennial. Joining the Orchestra of the Music Makers are two choirs, rock musicians, and a cast of Broadway-styled vocalists, epitomising the West Side Story composer’s deftness at fusing diverse styles. From solemn hymns and soothing meditations to edgy symphonic dances, and with an exciting infusion of Broadway, blues, rock, jazz and pop idioms, this eclectic musical-theatrical work is led by conductor Joshua Kangming Tan and directed by Edith Podesta, with production design by Brian Gothong Tan. Kevin Vortmann plays the Celebrant, following a sensational debut in the role with the Philadelphia Orchestra that was described by Opera News as “an exceptionally good choice for this central role…(with) immaculate dynamic control into the part’s many challenges."Joshua Kangming Tan, ConductorKevin Vortmann, CelebrantVilancico Vocal Ensemble, (Eudenice Palaruan, Vocal Coach)Symphonia Choralis, (Chong Wai Lun, Chorus Master)Volare Treble Voices, (Darius Lim, Chorus Master)Edith Podesta, DirectorBrian Gothong Tan, Multimedia DesignerIn collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in conjunction with OMM’s 10th anniversary

Voices Series The Swingles (UK)
“Stunning reinventions of songs by the likes of John Martyn, Elbow and Mumford & Sons, with subtle beatboxing and audacious harmonies… superhero singing to truly raise goosebumps.” – The GuardianThe legendary vocal group The Swingles make their Singapore debut at the Esplanade Concert Hall! The five-time Grammy Award-winners put their vocal virtuosity and versatility on stunning display as they present a performance packed with classical anthems, Baroque instrumentals, and folk, pop and rock songs, featuring artists such as The Beatles and Elbow, and hits including Libertango and Air on a G String. In 1963, American-born Ward Swingle first assembled a group of Parisian session singers to sing Bach’s keyboard music, resulting in the album Jazz Sebastian Bach that launched them to fame. For more than half a century since then, The Swingles (formerly known as The Swingle Singers) have pushed the boundaries of vocal music, amassing a repertoire featuring a huge variety of music that can be heard on their over 50 recordings, and on numerous film and TV soundtracks including Sex and the City, Grey’s Anatomy and Glee. Today, the seven young masters of their craft that make up the group are driven by the same innovative spirit that has defined the group since they first made waves in the ’60s.

Figure8 Agency Presents Tinariwen In Collaboration with Esplanade
Figure8 Agency, in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, is thrilled to present the Tuareg Grammy-winning sensation Tinariwen in Singapore! Tinariwen is an iconic desert blues band originally from northern Mali, a country which has given the world Toumani Diabaté and the great Ali Farka Touré, among others. Rooted in traditional Tuareg music but influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, their music addresses political awakening, problems of exile, repression, and sovereignty. The band has become a rallying point for the disenfranchised nation, while helping to garner global interest in desert blues, a hypnotic and danceable combination of blues, Tuareg folk, rock and more. Outlawed in Algeria and Mali, their first two albums found an international audience, and paved the way for a wave of Tuareg desert blues artists such as Bombino and Tamikrest. Their praises have been sung by some of the planet’s most influential musicians—Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, Robert Plant and Chris Martin, to name just a few.Elwan was recorded between Morocco and Joshua Tree, California, with special guests Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age), Kurt Vile and Matt Sweeney (Johnny Cash, Bonnie Prince Billy and Cat Power). This record reaffirms this Tuareg institution as one of the most legendary and influential African bands in recent decades. Elwan has been nominated for Best World Music Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards
