Synopsis

Advisory (Some Mature Content)

Nonsense
Devised & Performed by Down Syndrome Association (Singapore)
Conceptualised, Written & Directed by Jean Ng
Assistant Director, Julius Foo

Nonsense is a story about refugees.

It is also a story about us.

War is nonsense.

Millions losing their families and homes is nonsense.

And then,

What we take as sense may sometimes be nonsense.

What we take as nonsense may sometimes be beauty and hope.

Nonsense is an original play devised and performed by young people with Down syndrome and other intellectual differences.

The Box

Devised & Performed by St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School
Written & Directed by Dwayne Lau

In a world saturated by social media and its influences on lifestyles, latest trends and body image, the temptation is to curate a pseudo perfect way of life. The Box explores the struggles that teenagers face negotiating this superficial world, filtering away flaws and blemishes so that all that remains is a hazy tint of reality.

The Untitled Play (working title)

Staged by UNSAID
Directed by Serena Ho

A new play that will draw from crowd-sourced stories on mental illness and our attitudes towards this in contemporary society. Can we make space for multiple realities? This work is staged by a collective of young doers committed to transforming the untold narratives of Singapore into meaningful and engaging works of art.

M1 Peer Pleasure Youth Theatre Festival is a unique platform that mentors youths in the craft of theatre-making, providing opportunities for them to collaborate with their peers to stage productions with important social themes.

NINAGAWA Macbeth by Ninagawa Company (Japan)
To watch a Ninagawa production is to have an experience of a lifetime.NINAGAWA Macbeth, the iconic samurai classic that brought the late theatre titan Yukio Ninagawa international recognition, returns to Singapore after 25 years.Described by The Guardian as “achingly beautiful” and “a thing of wonder,” this tour de force transposes Shakespeare’s tragic play about a power-hungry general to the war-torn world of 16th century Azuchi-Momoyama Japan, turning Scottish warriors into katana-wielding samurai, and the highland woods into a mesmerising cherry blossom forest.Moving through breath-taking stage sets rich in symbolism, NINAGAWA Macbeth stays true to the original text while lending it the titan’s trademark blend of eastern and western styles, emphasised by a huge butsudan (Buddhist altar), witches in kabuki-style costumes, and the haunting sounds of temple gongs, Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem and Samuel Butler’s Adagio for Strings. The first of Ninagawa’s Shakespearean interpretations to be staged overseas, the 1985 international premiere of NINAGAWA Macbeth at the Edinburgh Festival put him in the pantheon of global theatre greats. In 2015, it was revived in celebration of Ninagawa’s 80th birthday. Marking the first anniversary of his passing, this special tour of NINAGAWA Macbeth is led by a stellar cast featuring eminent actors Masachika Ichimura and Yuko Tanaka.Directed by Yukio NinagawaOriginal play by William ShakespeareTranslated by Yushi OdashimaProduced by Saitama Arts Foundation and HoriPro Inc.Official airline: ANA

Raga Shivdasi Chauladevi by Minal Merai
An Unconditional Tale of Love and Devotion10th century A.D.: In the temple of Somnath Jyothirlinga, dancer Chaula performs for Lord Shiva every day out of love and devotion. King Bhimdev seeing her dance one day, falls in love and takes her for his bride. Chaula becomes a queen and mother, but her yearning to be close to Shiva remains. Eventually, she is granted permission to return to the temple, on condition that she gives up dancing. However, she breaks her promise and starts dancing for her lord, covering her face with a veil. Legend has it that at the climax of her dance, her soul left her physical body to be with Shiva.Choreographed and performed by Minal Merai, with music by Rajkumar Bharathi, the story of Chaula is told through the eyes of Samudra (played by Sivakumar Palakrishnan), the spirit of the ocean and eternal witness to the temple Somnath and its stories.Hailing from Baroda, Gujarat, Minal Merai has choreographed numerous dance productions for the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society; as an independent choreographer, she recently helmed Shivoham, which was staged at the National University Cultural Centre. Minal is the founder and director of Art Lahree Rangashala, established in 2014.Dancers: Minal Merai, Akshaya Rajangam, Madhumita Venkatesh, Janaki Nair, Kalyani Nair, Muskan RaoScript by: Gauri Gupta

Raga Rasanubhava: Musical expressions of Swathi Thirunal and Balamuralikrishna by Bhaskar's Arts Academy
The compositions of Swathi Thirunal and Balamuralikrishna embody the complete and synergistic elements of music and dance. As composers for dance, their works were a fine balance of rhythm and gait—with much scope for panchanadai (the five basic gaits) and theermanams (rhythmic patterns)—making the pieces highly danceable. As musicians, their ragas (scales) and lyrics lent themselves so well to abhinaya (expressions), that in the hands of sensitive musicians and soulful dancers, had the ability to move the audience.Join musicians and dancers from Bhaskar’s Arts Academy as they explore the compositions of these two seminal composers.Swathi ThirunalA king who lived around 200 years ago, Swathi Thirunal was also an artist whose creative vision took music beyond geographical borders. His work revealed more than bhakthi (devotion), and was essentially his philosophical outlook on life. Aside from his mastery of his mother tongue, Malayalam, and his profound knowledge of Sanskrit, Swathi Thirunal also composed in Telugu, Kannada, Marathi and Hindustani.BalamuralikrishnaKnown for publishing songs in all 72 melakartha ragas (fundamental scales) while he was still a teenager, Balamuralikrishna personified creativity and was consistently defying established traditions. Because of that, the carnatic world was gifted with ragas such as Rohini, Lavangi, Mahathi, Prathimadhyamavathi, Sumukham, and many more.Carnatic Composers is a series of concerts that explores the rich diversity of carnatic music through the composers who have defined and redefined the genre from the 15th century to the present.
